Space Hamsters is a game of choice. After you sign up and go through the tutorial, the path you choose is up to you.
In the beginning of the game, most players will follow the same basic path: you must use exploration shuttles to explore your planet, you must gather new resources, build the basic buildings of your city, and assemble a defensive force to protect your city.
After these basics are met however, you are free to explore whatever path interests you most.
1) Exploration - Most players chose to explore, some more than others. Some players instead simply trade for the maps of planets that interest them. This can be one of the most time consuming, but also the most rewarding, portions of the game.
2) Research - All players must acquire new technologies. However you can chose how you will do so. Some players build extensive spy networks to steal technologies from their friends and enemies. Other players build enormous research laboratories to discover things for themselves. Still more players prefer a blunt force path, they build large armies to take over enemy cities and hope to find technologies in the rubble when they are done conquering. Technologies can also further all of these goals, the combat oriented research offensive technologies while the explorers in the game research exploration technologies.
3) Combat - Many players chose to take part in the combat elements of Space Hamsters, even on the PVE server. The game is filled with monsters and aliens, and often times these monsters are sitting on top of valuable resource deposits. Players can also attack one another, and conquer enemy cities.
4) Exploitation - All buildings and soldiers in the game require some of the 16 available resources to build, so much of the game focuses on the acquisition and use of resources. Once again, however, the choices for accomplishing this goal are varied. The combat oriented conquer, the explorers find, the researchers improve the capacity of their own cities to mine.
And, of course, while doing this building, exploring, expanding, conquering and researching players get to take part in the Space Hamsters universe. There are alliances to join and friendships to form, active message boards to post on and threads to participate in. There are developers who really listen to player input and are constantly updating the game to add fun new features. Space Hamsters is a living universe teeming with players from every corner of the globe who want to conquer you, or team up with you, or exploit you, it's up to you to decide what kind of player you will be!
