NetDevil flashes Lego Racers

(19.12.2007, 00:03:35) NetDevil, the developer behind the upcoming Lego Universe MMO, is launching a new web-based division that will focus on browser-based games.

NetDevil is known for full-scale MMOs such as 2006’s Auto Assault, but with advancements in Flash game development, the developer sees a new opportunity to create smaller games that can still take advantage of the PC’s unrivaled connectivity and reach.

"Web-based development gives us the ability to try different kinds of games that we wouldn’t particularly try with a full 3D MMO budget—but they’re cool games nonetheless,” NetDevil president Scott Brown tells our competitors from Next-Gen “… Sometimes, things don’t warrant the same risk as a WoW-sized budget, but they can be just as successful.”

The first game coming out of the developer’s web division is a title based on the Lego Racers toy franchise. The kid-centric game will allow players to choose up to five different cars and compete against other players. Cars are customizable, and users can watch races live or race offline to land a spot on the leaderboards.

Lego Racers is just the first of “several” casual, web-based games that NetDevil plans on releasing in 2008. Details on other titles are to be announced.

Brown says that NetDevil’s web-based games could utilize various business models depending on what fits best, such as an ad-supported model, micropayments or subscription.

“That part of the business is not going anywhere,” says Brown. The Louisville, Colo.-based developer has a large group of developers working on Lego Universe and has another team working on Jumpgate Evolution, a remake of the company’s 2001 MMO.

“NetDevil likes taking risks and trying new ideas. We see the web as being another outlet of that,” Brown adds.
