(12.03.2007, 14:25:46) There are only a few months left until Travian Games releases their new masterpiece ?Travianer? for the German market. The game will be a roll-playing game set in the world of the strategy game Travian. But the name does not only stand for the expansion of their Romans, Gauls and Teutons universe, it also presents a new game concept, increasing requirements - striding away from the old limits. A sneak preview.
Travian is a shining example of a popular and thriving browser game. The mixture of “Tribal Wars” and “Settlers of Catan” got ahead of it's opponents due to the game's outstanding usability, personalized towns and superb design. Today, more than 1,000,000 people play Travian all over the world and it has been published in nearly 20 different countries from Austria to Finland and from Hong-Kong to Portugal. The latest release also includes new RPG features: Every player can now create and train his or her own hero.
This new feature foreshadows what Travian Games is currently working on: Their second PBBG will be a roll-playing game. Due to this, the player's perspective changes from the anonymous manager of his or her town to one single resident, showing his or her own personality and lifestyle. Because the game is based in the existing Travian universe, every player can traditionally choose between Romans, Gauls and Teutons. Your character walks through a world which is designed in a very similar style, but appears to be a lot livelier because of action and movement. The results you see in your browser are amazing and many levels above what we have been used to.
The beginning in Travianer is pretty easy. The player is shown a map giving him the opportunity to find resources and sublimate them. A good example: You can find clay in a clay-pit and go to a pottery to process it. Finished items or products can be sold at the marketplace.
By doing this work, the player gains experience points and gets silver coins for selling his or her goods. This experience points can be traded for new skills and the coins can be used to buy new items or equipment. Travianer reduces these standard RPG features to a minimum. Not just if you compare the complexity, even the time the player needs to gain enough skills or experience points is reduced due to gaining points for every action.
The new idea this game is based on might seem a bit strange at first. But it becomes apparent after getting to know other players within the chat, inviting them in your virtual home, competing against each other in the arena and finally after joining a guild.
As you are not forced to spend too much time with training your own character or gaining experience points, you can spend more time within the community. Travianer gives you a lot of different possibilities to communicate or interact with other players. You can compete with players in mini-games and on the right you will find a chat bar which is always accessible. Furthermore you can open clubs (as known from facebook) to exchange views on certain interests or just chat with a special peer group. Forums and a message system are included as well.
Travianer is a game with a new focus: The community. Instead of being a byproduct within a good game, Travian Games tries to center it. This works much better than expected and the guild feature leads to nearly ultimate perfection concerning community. Members of a guild can share resources in their own warehouse and use them to construct guild buildings. Every guild can send players to tournamentsto get awards or even artefacts that every member can benefit from. Another way to get more artefacts is to rob opponent guilds warehouses. All the work and help within the guild often leads to a close relation with other members.
Some other browser-based RPGs recently tried a similar idea, but the complex trade or experience system makes you lose time and may ask too much of you. Nevertheless this system will perfectly work in Travainer, because everything is designed for it and only for it. Less seems to be more in this case. It's aim to center the community is an attempt to swim against the current trend of developing single player games.
