Build up a nation - conquer your enemies

(08.12.2010, 23:57:00) Caesary is a strategy game that weaves together nation building and military strategy to create immersive and dynamic play. New players begin as consul of a small Roman town, and are given the tools needed to quickly grow into a full-fledged city of the Roman Empire. Throughout the course of the game, players can build additional cities, recruit powerful heroes, and create unstoppable armies as they struggle for dominance.

Caesary blends together many successful aspects of other games to make it unique. Similar to games like Civilization, Caesary give you full command of your cities, allowing you to carefully micromanage your economy and military. Similar to many strategy games, Caesary allows for players to customize their armies including troop type, size, and position, making combat against the computer and other players both challenging and dynamic. Lastly, Caesary has many parts similar to role-playing games, in that you can customize heroes as they level up, complete quests throughout the world, and participate in unique game content organized by Caesary game masters.

Domestic Management

The domestic management of Caesary revolves around a player’s ability to gather and utilize Caesary’s five resources – Sesterces (gold), crops, wood, iron, and stone. Gathering resources requires training workers at various resource producing buildings within your town. In addition, a large number of other buildings can also be built, from those that enhance the domestic portion of your empire (Universities, Warehouses, etc.) to those that will give you an edge in war (Barracks, Stables, etc.). While the premise seems simple at first glance, the actual dynamics of the game quickly turn out to be complex and well rounded. To build walls you need stone. To get stone you need to have workers (requiring cottages) and the ability to recruit many at once (requiring a high level town hall). To get ballistae you need to have the Arming technology, which in turn requires a high level University. To save for high-profile buildings and technologies, you must stockpile resources and gold, which can be dangerous as other players are always looking to maraud cities with abundant resources.

War Caesary Style

Once you have gotten the hang of managing your cities, it is time to enter the more challenging and immersive part of Caesary – war. Even raiding wilderness areas for gold and resources can require careful and thought-out planning. Your armies are composed of heroes who lead a combination of footmen, cavalry, and siege engines. Each unit has special abilities and is effective against certain types of units. Therefore, troop formation is key, as a tactically arranged smaller army led by a strong hero can easily defeat a larger and more expensive army. Fighting is broken down into marauding (stealing resources) and conquering. Marauding other players smartly can reward you with bonus resources to help you grow faster. Conquering other cities can make them your tributaries, requiring them to send you 20% of all gold and resources gathered every hour.

Expand and Conquer

As you grow in size and strength in Caesary, the world map will become increasingly important. Simple yet well detailed, the world map is the visual guide on which you can survey your surroundings. Important resources appear as forests, mountains, deserts, and rivers, while other players appear as cities. While at first it is possible to set about conquering other players by yourself, you will likely find you need the help of others to dominate your surrounding region. To do this, players can unite and form leagues, allowing them to communicate and touch bases with others in a more private setting. During special contests and quests, leagues often rally together to struggle for supremacy over territory and prestige chart rankings, creating massive conflicts spanning every corner of the world of Caesary.

Conclusion

Caesary can be an enjoyable game for both casual players and hardcore gamers. Casual players will find the city building aspects of the game enjoyable, and can still find exciting challenge in conquering nearby wilderness areas. For more serious gamers, the ever growing and changing world of Caesary, as well as the constant struggle for supremacy by Caesary’s thousands of players, should easily be enough to occupy their time.
